FAQ's

Appointments: Your appointment time has been reserved specially for you. We request 24 hour notice if you need to reschedule or cancel an appointment.  We certainly understand that things happen and appropriate notice is not always possible. We appreciate your courtesy in letting us know as quickly as possible if you cannot make your appointment, in order for us to be able to accommodate other patients who may need to get in to see Dr. Sheppard.

Insurance: Sheppard Dental accepts many insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, CIGNA, Aetna, Guardian, Delta Dental, Southland, Assurant, Humana, United Concordia, and United Healthcare. We will work to properly verify and maximize your benefits.  Estimated patient portions, including any co-pays and deductibles, are due at time of service.

What will happen at my first appointment?
At your first appointment, Dr. Sheppard and her staff will review your medical history, take x-rays and intra-oral photographs as indicated, and complete a thorough oral examination. Your personal treatment plan will be created and reviewed with you. Generally, we will also be able to clean your teeth at this appointment.

What do I need to bring to my first appointment?
You will need to fill out initial paperwork. For this, you will need your driver’s license, your insurance card, and a list of any medications you are currently taking. If you are not the “insured”, meaning you are covered by your spouse or parent’s insurance, please make sure you have the insured’s date of birth and their insurance card as well.

What if I have an emergency?
Please call us as soon as you determine you have a dental emergency. Currently, after-hours calls are forwarded to Dr. Sheppard, who will return your call promptly and work with you to solve the emergency.

Do you offer painless dentistry?
Dr. Sheppard prides herself on “gentle dentistry.” Every effort is made to make the patient as comfortable as possible with all aspects of the dental experience. Sheppard Dental also offers nitrous oxide sedation (“laughing gas”) as indicated for patients who desire this additional service!

What types of payment do you accept?
Sheppard Dental accepts cash, check and credit card payments.  We will process your insurance claim (upon payment of any co-pays or deductibles) as a courtesy to our patients. We also offer in-office financing through Care Credit.
